ejb review: week 7 (Feb 3 - Feb 9)

Filed under: Eric Benevides — Eric Benevides @ 2:24 a.m.

Last week I decided to pull back a bit and just focus on some necessary things that I needed to get done in my life, such as cleaning and getting rid of my 'house'. In addition I sent out a slew of emails to various hosting providers in asia and latam. Seeing as some of the emails I sent out on Friday haven't been responded to yet, I'm going to give it until Wednesday EOD next week to pull the trigger (I'm gonna send out a few more during this time, as well). In any case, depending on how fast they provision the server I'll be focusing my day-by-day after Wed on either getting the prod server up and running (again) or if they end up taking their time I will try and get my auctionbot fix to the announce function complete.

On the home front: I got one bedroom clean last week, and getting the garage clean is next week's task. I'll follow the process of just doing a little bit after work each day.

I failed last week on waking up on time; sleeping in a few days. Today (Sunday) however I forced myself to wake up at 7am (even though I fell asleep at my usual 3am). As a result I am quite sleepy now (~9:30 pm here at the time of this writing) so hopefully I will be able to fall asleep at a normal hour. Then I just need to keep it up through the week. One pot at a time...

  1. I don't agree with the choice to wake up at 7am after you went to bed at 3am. Yes it may be a faster route to getting your schedule back on track, but your entire day that follows 4hr of sleep is often spacey/unproductive/etc. It also usually feels awful. I would just slowly readjust if your sleep schedule gets off track.

As for falling asleep in general I've found: doing some form of exercise during the day, not using the comp for 45 mins before trying to fall asleep, and living in a tropical paradise with the ambient sound of crickets and crashing waves all very helpful.

  2. Good to hear that at least 1 room got sorted and otherwise those emails got sent and there's some clear deadline to get that part going.

Other than the above though, there is a *lot* missing from this review, Eric and it's been consistently missing throughout the week so the outlook is rather bleak. Do yourself a favour and actually stick *each and every day* to a. going to sleep at a reasonable hour so you can wake up early b. waking up early *and* doing some work for yourself before the saltmines c. actually using this place here/the chan to the maximum because you need it, so just stick to those daily comments/reports/whatever-you-want-to-call-them but *daily* then, ok?

It doesn't take all that long to write a few sentences and there's not much to "think" about it either - note what you achieved during the day + set out what you will tackle next day, that's all but there is *no excuse* to skip any day, it just doesn't wash anyhow.

This is true; even a few sentences is something I need to do each day. There really can't be an excuse, so I'll start getting this bare minimum done consistently.

I'm gonna try your "45 mins of no comp/other stimulation before bed" tip I think. May be a good time to get some more reading (be it books, blogs, logs, whathaveyou) in tbh. Exercise is also something I could use more of; while I'm quite skinny by default my lifestyle is rather sedentary, so getting the blood flowing couldn't hurt.

  4. Yesterday I did not get any cleaning done; ended up working late for work and copped out of manual labor again. On the flip side I woke up at ~7am today, and actually got my ass onto the comments section of this review so that is nice.

I need to jump to saltmine work shortly, but for today I will be focusing on the same three things: Sorting hosters, breaking down / cleaning all those boxes from garage, and going to bed before midnight. The key for today is to actually do -all- those things.

  5. Set a maximum limit for "working late for saltmine" - there really is no reason to not to. And to be honest, I'm not even sure there's any defensible reason for working additional hours for them with no additional pay but anyways, at least make sure it's clearly limited or otherwise it will probably keep spilling over and provide easy ways to avoid other stuff that you need done (cleaning in this instance but more generally whatever else).

The hosters can possibly wait until tomorrow since that was the deadline, right? Get more cleaning done already, it can't keep going on for weeks, you surely don't have the Taj Mahal to clean there, what!

  6. Ack re: the cleaning and setting a hard limit on saltmines. I got a dent made in the garage yesterday and aim to get it to where I want it this evening (should time out well with trash pickup tomorrow morning).

As for the emails, I actually found a hoster willing to gpg (or so they said; they have yet to actually send any login details)! Will be a rented server in Brasil, a company called "HostOne". Gonna try and close that out today as well.

  7. I was able to get the garage to where I wanted it to yesterday. Felt good. Today I did some misc cleaning that just needed to be done, as well as changed all the air filters around the house. My goal for this weekend house-wise is to get some needed yard work done while it is still cool here.

I told the hoster to move forward today, but the latency on them is slightly sluggish. They do seem at least human though, and I'm not being routed through any ticket system nor have been told to create any accounts as of yet (have been negotiating the specs 100% through email, which has been nice). They claim 48 hours for set-up time so even if they start tomorrow (I'm assuming they won't work weekends) it probably won't be ready until early next week. As such, this weekend I'm gonna get those fixes to auctionbot announcing done at least.

Sleep-wise I've been doing much better, going to bed at the latest midnight and getting up consistently at ~8am the past few days. However, still hasn't been enough to consistently be doing non-saltmine work before saltmines.

  8. That sounds not-bad really, keep at it! And glad to hear it felt good to start seeing some stuff done - it should feel good indeed.

The hoster sounds likely to be relatively sluggish but at least worth a try if they are indeed unexpectedly human otherwise - who knows, in time they might even get in the WoT or something, heh.

Re sleep, it sounds at least a better point than it was so not that bad, just aim to gradually adjust to go to sleep earlier than midnight for sure because ~8 hours of sleep are usually needed anyway.

  9. Ack on the aiming for before midnight for getting to sleep.

Re the hoster I pulled the trigger with them on Friday and made payment. They're claiming 48 hours to deliver so I'm expecting that means Mon-Tues and possibly it'll be ready Wed.

As for this weekend I was able to get some yardwork done today, with hopes to finish tomorrow. I'm also aiming to get the planned work on auctionbot complete tomorrow.

  10. [...] Last week was to get my garage clean, get the hoster nailed down, and then either start setting up the new server or getting the auctionbot fix complete depending on if the server was provisioned. I was also aiming to get my sleep schedule a bit healthier and to keep up with my daily updates. [...]
