ejb review of Feb 10-Feb 16 ; plan for Feb 17-Feb 23

Filed under: Eric Benevides — Eric Benevides @ 1:39 a.m.

Last week was to get my garage clean, get the hoster nailed down, and then either start setting up the new server or getting the auctionbot fix complete depending on if the server was provisioned. I was also aiming to get my sleep schedule a bit healthier and to keep up with my daily updates.

I was able to get the garage clean (started on some yard work too) and secured a hoster. I also made the fixes to auctionbot that I needed to make and let MP know. My sleep schedule was a bit better this past week, but still has room for improvement (been going to bed at around midnight, need to pull that back to pre-midnight). Likewise for the daily updates (I was more consistent than last week, but still missed a couple of days).

So, my plan for this upcoming week is to keep at doing those daily updates.. daily, and to start going to bed before midnight. The server should be ready midway through next week, and MP will be available sometime in march so that should give me another window to get the server prepped and ready. Specifically this week I'm going to retrace the steps I took with the Shinjiru server with this new one, leveraging the notes I took previously (I think this new server will be Cent OS 6 vs Cent OS 7, so it will be slightly different than before).

On the house front I'm going to continue cleaning up the yard and then I'll probably turn my attention back inside. The living room will be my next target for de-cluttering.

Finally, I need to start applying for remote gigs now rather than later. I'm going to commit to getting at least 5 applications sent this week.

  1. As it's the 2nd half of the month, you should supposedly have more time too, or so you said. It all seems doable, if the de-cluttering seems rather slow-going still - is it really *that* time-consuming? At any rate, do keep up the daily updates at least for the discipline and accountability of it if you really don't yet see any other benefit to them.

  2. Agreed that it all seems doable, and I'll keep up the daily updates. I definitely see the benefit in the organization of my mind aspect too.

Re: the de-cluttering being time-consuming, while it is going quicker than I built it up to be in my head, it is a lot of stuff. Though the last few weeks I was consumed a bit by saltmines; should be able to devote more time to getting it sorted. There's also a small chunk of my ex-gf's stuff (including some furniture) that I promised to send to her, however, I agreed to do this in pieces as she doesn't have space at her place now. This will be the most annoying piece I think, though most likely not too time-consuming because there are companies that'll come and box it up for you, etc.

Today I got the login credentials from the new hoster (they indeed sent login details encrypted to my pubkey, which was very nice). I logged it and poked around a bit and it looks okay so far. Tomorrow I'm going to spend 2 hours getting a jump start on getting a full LAMP set up on it. I'll include my progress in tomorrow's update.

I'm making Wednesday my deadline for getting my 5 job applications for this week out.

Most monsters grow way bigger in one's head than they are for reals, once you actually get to work, yeah.

I promised to send to her, however, I agreed to do this in pieces as she doesn't have space at her place now.

And what are you going to do if she ~never has "space at her place"? At the very least set a final deadline on it and make it crystal clear that you'll send them by that day the latest, no matter what (though in fairness it's getting *really* grating the way you insist on rewarding idiocy and indolence but hopefully you are moving on from that too).

Yeah, this is a point that need some deadline, not just for her but for myself as well (I've been avoiding thinking much on it which is not useful).

I'm definitely moving away from this behavior in the general sense as I can see how it just ends up cutting off my legs in the long run. This specific instance with my ex, well, without getting into the details I am doing it more because I see it as my final negotiated actions for someone I accepted responsibility for beforehand. In any case, I'm aiming for this to be the last time I get myself into such a pickle with someone else.

In updates, I got gcc, apache, mysql and php all installed on the server. I have to say I am very happy I took those detailed notes last time as it saved me quite a bit of time this time around. I (quite expectedly) ran into the same string of "tiny-time-sinks" yet they were a breeze to step over. I still have to get the various "modules" and etc. installed but my notes ought to help there too.

  5. Today was less productive. I woke up at 8 am but saltmine work ran late. I spruced up my resume but didn't send out any applications; I think I'm just going to go to sleep now and actually try to get up at 6 am (that's about 8 hours sleep from now). I'll send out those emails before the saltmines like I should be doing anyway. I'm planning on spending another 2 hours on continuing the server set up tomorrow and then getting to bed early again.

  6. Sound ok as a plan, stick to it.

  7. Managed to wake up at 7am today at least (had some trouble falling asleep that early) but did get those applications sent and my 2 hours of server setup done. The rest of my time on Friday and this weekend will be devoted to getting that server to where it was before I pulled the plug on shinjiru.
