Family tech support: HTML cleanup ((Fancy that… in this case there was a 5-line thing that couldn’t be sanely edited as it had been exploded into several screenfuls of markup by MS Office.)) – 0.65h
JWRD: training material HTML cleanup ((I’m starting to think I’ve gone into “PhD assembly line” territory here; but it’s involved quite a few markup fixes or improvements in addition to some more mechanical cleanups so I’m not sure how helpful automation could be here. I did write a script last week for normalizing mixed tabs and spaces as a first step, which is handy beyond just HTML.)) – 5.1h
JWRD: set up a V workspace for and start refreshing my memory on yrc ((I started on this after going to bed on the earlier-for-me side but being unable to sleep.)) – 1.8h

diana_coman: jfw so now that scrolling in yrc will be fixed by the end of this week – what else is in your shall-not-be-written-because-then-it-doesn’t-count plan for this week?

jfw: diana_coman: there’s more lesson & homework development, writing, moving the health plan application along, and communications re cutting off the Panama apartment

  1. As a one-off and with future use, the html cleanup is not necessarily any problem in itself even if it ate one full day. The question is at most whether it was a priority atm or it only got promoted there to avoid other stuff, heh.

And welcome back to the summaries!

  2. It may be a kind of “oven cleaning”, but if anything I think it should have been done sooner.

    Updated for Weds-Thurs.

  3. So it’s pretty much close to the plan, mainly JWRD prep, except for that rabbit hole exploration – out of curiosity why/how come…Pascal’s creator now? At any rate, you *can* follow those later/another time, not like you have to drop everything else whenever it happens, do you? Lol.

Meant to ask actually – do all new training sessions take the same amount of new preparation? As hm, it should reduce/reuse at some point or I would have thought so, at least.

  4. What caught my interest was his work on a full, literate compiler + high-level-language OS + hardware stack, “Project Oberon”, from 1992 and revived 2013. I know little about Pascal, beyond that it was big in the day and Knuth used it.

It felt like I had some pent-up appetite, stumbled onto a feast, and couldn’t bear to put it down until I’d got some idea of what was there.

On the training prep, it will reduce at some point but I’m not sure when (Robinson was a bit more optimistic here). The reading and homework exercises for our first three sessions are from this existing Unix course we found. This had the benefit of providing a good amount of content but the cost of inapplicable, confusing and not-quite-working parts. The first time around we gave them out as-is, focusing our prep time on the lectures. I thought it went OK for a first time (and the two students were getting a large discount in consideration of that) but I wasn’t OK with leaving it like that.

Past the first three sessions the situation is a bit different, as the readings and exercises are drawn from various places and some home-made. These still need shoring up as well.

    Summaries added for Friday-Sunday.

  5. Ah, that Oberon project did catch my eye not so long ago when I did the last look around for some alternative to the various familiar monsters otherwise. It sounded good but then it still had its own set of troubles from what I recall, to the point that it didn’t seem all that worth the trouble of any switch. Granted, I didn’t go all the way into the rabbit hole, heh. (Thing with going into rabbit holes is – where’s your write-up then? :P )

No optimism should go unpunished – should have gotten Robinson through the course first & fast & repeatedly until all materials were perfectly tuned and in no need of much further futzing with! (On a more practical note from experience though – while materials can be changed forever, it’s more your experience at teaching the topic that needs to get to the point where there’s very little to no need for much prep before a lesson.)
