JFW review, week of 8 Jun 2020

Filed under: Jacob Welsh — Jacob Welsh @ 5:53 am

JWRD:
Training material HTML cleanup, readthrough, edits (the third of this three-part series, though this one needed the most corrections and I haven’t quite finished it) – 10.5h
Preparing my on-the-road machine and consolidating several rounds of old documents that had accumulated on it – 2.8h
Office improvements – 0.2h

Young Hands:
Chat – 3.2h
Reading, comments – 1.8h
Writing: end of last week’s summaries – 0.4h

Cottage: work + travel time – 10-15h (two trips; I didn’t track Monday’s time closely). There was pruning and hauling brush, repairing a door, and meeting contractors for tree and pest removal.

Reading: Trilema, US politics – 4.3h

Play: continued secret affair with Project Oberon – 12.3h

I’m finding my avoidance of the daily summaries built up to a strong resistance on getting started, but then the looking back turned out enjoyable enough. I’ll give another shot at making it daily.

  1. So looking at it all, are you happy with it as it stands (perhaps apart from that daily summaries avoidance)? Any change you want to make?

At the end of the day, if the look back turns up to be just a sort of keeping me informed, it’s no wonder it ends up a hated chore really and it misses the point entirely. (I can go about my plenty of work otherwise perfectly fine without bothering to try and follow what you are doing, sure.)

For that matter, if/when you end up with such avoidance that it even blocks doing something entirely – maybe figure out some alternative that works to achieve the point of it, nevermind the letter of it. Specifically: do you want to improve the way you are spending your time and effort? If yes, does reviewing your week/day help and how? If no, then state it as such and let it be, what.

  2. I’m unhappy that there were key projects on which I made no progress at all, even where doing so would have been easy. I think this happened because my task selection was pretty much spur-of-the-moment, perhaps besides the training material work. If that’s so, then a bit more deliberate planning would seem to be the fix.

  3. Well, yesterday I had a couple chosen tasks written down for the day, half of which I again kicked to “later”. So I dunno, maybe I have to admit I don’t care that much about improving it? But if I don’t, I foresee that I’ll be always accosted by chores demanding attention that would have been better done earlier…
