Required tasks, with estimated duration

  1. One blog post (but now I realize I'm not clear on whether this is to be finishing the past week's post on blog setup - slipping on the schedule - or reflections on my first month in #ossasepia - slipping on completion of the first; help!): 15h (this seems high to me, and isn't based on much of anything, but maybe isn't even enough, and I'm not sure how to predict it better, for either topic; is this just something that improves with experience? Help #2!)
  2. Re-read of http://ossasepia.com/2018/02/06/its-only-words-and-assumptions-and-priorities-and-ouch/ - I'm through the article itself but reckon I should also include the (English) comments and log references: 2h
  3. Next week's review: 4h
  4. Next week's plan: 4h
  5. Salt mines: 25h

Time permitting

  1. Investigate undelivered pingbacks. I've gathered that getting these sent isn't an optional thing, but Wordpress isn't too helpful with it and there's a workaround.
  2. Test blog image uploading. I saw whaack and thimbronion struggled with this and expect I'll be in for the same if I don't prepare.
  3. Prepare to negotiate next year's apartment lease. My present contract is up for renewal in January; while I'm fairly happy with it and would rather not move, I'm told the local real estate market has continued to decline so I intend to check my options and likely push for either a discount or improvements.

  1. Re image uploading, just don't waste time trying to use the mpwp interface. Use a script like the one written by mp that diana_coman linked me to.

  2. @Will Haack: thanks; I try to be careful in thinking I don't have to do things the MP-WP way, as part of the point of running it is that I'm not fully aware of the essential features of a blog, so should start with the thing my betters recommend. The trick then is to distinguish what's by design and what's an artifact of the swamps it was plucked from. My understanding is the main things when it comes to images are filing by date and standardizing resolutions, with one full-size on click and one thumbnail for inlining in the article. (Doesn't look like you got that part in your Seoul/Tokyo posts which would be why they're slow to load.)

    If I might hazard some advice on referencing: the link you gave doesn't point to the event you mention of her linking you, nor is it the same link she gave. It looks like you didn't grasp MP's comment about using the new selection mechanism and took the given string a bit too literally.

  3. Jacob, there is a blog spec to help re essential features of a blog. The mp-wp is indeed the "thing that exists and can serve" as a sort of tool rather than what one would really want to use if there weren't so many other things more important to fix first. Billymg was/is working on cleaning it up and writing some tests for it as a starter to gradually bring it to some sanity, hopefully.

    Will, read the manual of the selection mechanism instead of derping about with it. And see the logs.

    1. This week's article is on the time in #ossasepia
    Re estimated time: it certainly improves with experience but you have to get some experience in first to have what to improve even, lol. As I gather now, your timing there is pretty much a wild guess out of "need a number" so yes, unlikely to map on to anything that will happen. Can you list the steps you want to take for writing this reflection post? Even if initial in here or in #o, I can help you with those and to build up from there something that can work as an actual plan & estimate.
    2. Including at the very least the comments (English, the Ro one from anon is not really bringing anything useful to the topic of the conversation anyway) is useful, yes. For that matter, the comments on blogs around here are part of the "post" really as they are on topic and at times can bring quite a lot to it/explore some parts in more detail. But with the log links be careful that you don't end up burning a lot of time in there - it's rather easy to get lost following the context there & it's also quite time-consuming to follow the logs esp if you are not already familiar with them. Btw how familiar are you with #t logs? I know you read/followed some at least but do you usually follow?
    3-4 Did the review+plan this week take 4 hours each or how/why those numbers here?

    Can you list the steps you want to take for writing this reflection post?

    1. Re-read my notes and search the logs from my time to refresh memory. (From my back-log reading I have some clippings of things I found interesting or significant, maybe these would be good as a separate post.)
    2. Write a list of the major happenings, questions, decisions and realizations, or new ones that come to mind.
    3. Draft & revise.

    how familiar are you with #t logs?

    I've followed particular references and searched for particular topics, and indeed found it easy to get sucked in without much to show. I tried a couple times to follow systematically but never managed to keep it up for more than a couple weeks. I found this discouraging as far as jumping in since the log was so often cited as essential. Though one thing I've learned from the reading here is that the pressure one has to motivate oneself makes a big difference: of course I couldn't proceed efficiently, lacking a palpable cause to do so.

    Just about. I expect they'll get faster with practice and better organization, but I'll stay cautious for now.

    diana_coman: so you'll likely end up spending until Thursday/Friday reading forever more and accumulating notes/whatevers since there's always more to read/grab/do/avoid-thinking-of-the-ugly-how-the-fuck-do-I-do-this
    diana_coman: jfw: do me a favour and start not with archeology but with your own original goals and troubles and so on; you already know both the story and the ending there, so chart first the structure of how you're going to tell this and only *after that* and *at writing time* search for the needed references

    diana_coman: jfw: so aim for an outline by tomorrow evening the latest, the actual writing Thurs/Fri, review Saturday and you're done
